FotoFirst — Mankichi Shinshi Takes Serial Street Photographs of Lonely People

Ciao Mankichi, how are you?
I’m very fine, but I have to lose some weight… Too fat to walk on the street and take photographs, haha!
What is photography for you?
Photography is a way to make a statement about something by including it in the frame, and leaving out everything else. It’s an interpretation of the world through my own eyes.
What is Elimination Method about?
Elimination Method is one of my ongoing street photography collections. It’s my own way to confront myself with someone else on the same terms: even in a majority system, no one can lose if there’s two people in total. So I like a person who is alone. By shooting a lonely individual or an isolated group of people as the center of the world I’m photographing, they seem to become a precious presence. I may be exaggerating, but when looking at the scenes I collect in the Elimination Method, I feel like I’ve become good friends with my subjects.
Where can you be found online?
This is my website, and I’m also on Flickr, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter.
